Sora and Roxas are two characters in the video game Kingdom Hearts 2 (Sora first appeared in the original Kingdom Hearts, and Roxas appeared briefly in an extra video after the game ends, though he was still nameless at the time; he also appeared only in a still image at the end of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories). Sora is the story's hero, the young man who must save the various worlds from the evil of the Heartless. Roxas is, well, a little more complicated.
You could say that Sora and Roxas are two sides of the same coin. Roxas is a Nobody, and Nobodies come into existance when someone is turned into a Heartless and their will is so strong that it continues on its own, even though it no longer has a heart. Roxas was "born" when Sora became a Heartless in the first game, so he is in fact Sora's Nobody. He is a part of Sora that exists separately, at least for a while. While they are, in the most basic sense, the same person, there are enough differences in their personalities and mannerisms to consider them completely different characters.
Sora is bubbly and energetic. He's cheerful and always wants to make his friends smile. He doesn't allow himself to brood or be gloomy (though it's debatable if he himself doesn't allow it or if Donald and Goofy don't allow it XD). Even when separated from his childhood friends Kairi and Riku, Sora remains positive and upbeat. Roxas, on the other hand, is decidedly less chipper. He doesn't really smile very much, or laugh. This isn't to say he's completely unhappy, or that he's a typical angsty emo kid. He's just not very cheerful, and he has good reason to be. Haunted by memories of a life he never had (Sora's life), he doesn't understand himself at all. He's confused, uncertain, always seems to be in deep thought.
The differences undoubtedly stem from their situations and experiences. Sora has always been surrounded by friends. He grew up with Riku and Kairi and the rest of the kids on the islands. Even when they are taken away from him, he finds new friends in Donald and Goofy, who always keep Sora smiling. Roxas, on the other hand, only had the members of Organization XIII for company, and we are given every indication that they are not a friendly, close-knit group. The only person he could really call a friend was Axel (though it's possible that he was friendly with Demyx as well, nothing specific was mentioned of it). Even the friends he has while in Twilight Town aren't real. Roxas doesn't have a Donald or a Goofy.
Despite how different they are, they still yet have some similarities that can't be overlooked. They are both good-natured (although Roxas, as a Nobody who has no heart, really shouldn't be so good-natured). Both never back down from a challenge. Both would willingly walk into danger to help or protect those they care for. Above all, both have been swept up into stories and plots and machinations with many expectations thrust onto them, when they really just want to have fun with their friends.
Throughout the games, Sora and Roxas see very little of each other. Roxas see's Sora while he is still asleep in the "pod" that Namine placed him in. This is just for a moment before Roxas is absorbed into Sora, so that Sora can awaken and be complete. At the time, Sora still had no idea that Roxas ever existed. Late in the game, Sora and Roxas have a battle, but it appears to be something of a dream sequence, taking place in Sora's mind. At the end of the fight, Roxas seems to have accepted Sora as his "other". Then, at the main end of the game, we see Sora smile to Kairi (who herself has absorbed Namine). He briefly turns into Roxas and smiles to Namine, then fades back into Sora. Roxas still exists, but he is inside Sora, and we are lead to believe that the two of them are now one.
Although they have little actual interaction in the game, I feel that if they would have remained separate and met, they would have become good friends. They have enough in common to respect each other, and enough differences to keep things interesting. I personally was not happy with the idea of them becoming one, because Roxas was so different from Sora, different enough to be his own person. I wish they could have simply co-existed as best friends.
And yeah, I gotta admit that all the adorable SoraxRoxas yaoi fanart had a big influence on my interest in their relationship. Be that as it may, you're welcome to join the fanlisting if you like any aspect of their relationship!
The title of the site, "White Reflection", is the name the ending song for Gundam Wing: Endless Waltz. I think the beautiful lyrics really suit Sora and Roxas. If you've never heard the song, you owe it to yourself to check it out!
